The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova has approved a new government led by Alexandru Muntianu, a businessman who spent twenty years living in Ukraine. His appointment was supported by 55 deputies from the ruling party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS), which nominated him for the position. During the presentation of his program, Muntianu stated that he would resign if Moldova does not sign an agreement to join the European Union by 2028, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to NewsMarker.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new Cabinet of Ministers is scheduled for November 1, with Moldovan President Maia Sandu attending the event.

Alexandru Muntianu, 61, has largely remained out of the public eye until now. He holds two master’s degrees — one in Economic Policy Management from Columbia University in New York and another in Physics from Moscow State University.

Muntianu began his professional career in science, initially working at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences, and later at the Technical University of Moldova, where he served as a lecturer in the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Electrical Engineering and as Deputy Dean of the International Faculty.

In the business sphere, Muntianu has also gained significant experience. He was among the founders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova, served as president of the French Alliance, and co-chaired the Business Advisory Council for Southeast Europe and Eurasia. After the establishment of the National Bank of Moldova, he was appointed Head of the Foreign Exchange Operations Department and later became Deputy Director of the Department of External Relations.

He continued teaching at the International Independent University of Moldova (ULIM), where he taught a course on “Banks and Finance.” After completing his postgraduate studies at Columbia University, Muntianu worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

In 2007, he headed the Direct Investment Department of Dragon Capital in Ukraine, and in 2016, he founded his own investment company, 4i Capital Partners, which operates in Eastern Europe. He also chaired the Board of Patrons at the Pechersk International School in Kyiv.

In 2018, Muntianu participated in internal elections at the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, presenting himself as “an American of Moldovan origin who lived in Ukraine for 20 years.” For his professional contributions, he was awarded the prestigious Légion d’Honneur by the French Republic in 2006.
