On the night of November 5-6, residents across the United States will have the opportunity to witness the second of three consecutive supermoons of 2025. The full Moon, commonly known as the “Beaver Moon,” will be the largest and brightest of the year, according to Baltimore Chronicle with reference to BBC.
Astronomers explain that a supermoon occurs when the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth, called perigee. The Moon’s orbit is not perfectly circular but elliptical, meaning its distance from our planet varies. At perigee, the Moon is roughly 354,000 kilometers from Earth, while at its farthest point, the apogee, it is around 400,000 kilometers away. When a full Moon coincides with perigee or comes within 90% of it, it is classified as a supermoon.
The term “supermoon” was first introduced in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle. Supermoons can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than typical full Moons. November’s Beaver Moon will be the closest full Moon to Earth in 2025, making it exceptionally bright and large.
The name “Beaver Moon” has historic origins. It was used by some Native American tribes and early European settlers, as this was the time of year when beavers become especially active, building dams and storing food for the winter. In the United Kingdom, beavers were hunted to extinction in the 16th century, but conservation efforts in recent years have successfully reintroduced them to parts of England and Scotland.
For those in the U.S. planning to observe the Moon, astronomy clubs and planetariums will host viewing events and provide telescopes for enthusiasts to enjoy the Beaver Moon.
Weather forecasts suggest that conditions will vary across the country. Clear skies are expected in parts of the East Coast, Midwest, and South, while cloud cover and light rain may affect some areas in the Northwest. The best viewing locations are likely to be cities with minimal cloud coverage, providing ideal conditions for seeing the supermoon in its full brilliance.
For anyone who misses this event, the final supermoon of 2025 will occur on December 4, offering another chance to witness a remarkable celestial phenomenon.
