A car bomb exploded in Moscow early on Monday morning, killing Russian Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, the Investigative Committee of Russia reported, Baltimore Chronicle з via на Reuters. Sarvarov served as head of the Operational Training Department of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces. According to officials, the explosion occurred when an explosive device placed beneath the bottom of a car detonated on Yaseneva Street in the capital.
The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case into the incident, exploring multiple leads, including the possibility that the attack was organized by Ukrainian special services. Authorities released footage showing a white car heavily damaged in what appeared to be a residential neighborhood.
Sarvarov is the third high-ranking Russian military officer killed since late 2024. In December 2024, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiological, Chemical and Biological Protection Forces, was killed in an explosion alongside his assistant as they left a Moscow residential building. Investigators said the explosive device had been planted on an electric scooter near the building.
Earlier in April, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was killed by a car bomb in an eastern suburb of Moscow, marking the second targeted assassination of a senior military official within months.
