Poll Most Ukrainians support anti-tobacco measures measures to prevent youth tobacco use.

This is evidenced by the results of an all-Ukrainian survey, which were presented by project coordinator of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology Alexander Shcherbatyuk, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to Shcherbatyuk, according to the results of the study, the vast majority of respondents support a ban on advertising of brands of electronic smoking devices and electronic cigarettes (79%) and a ban on the visible placement of packs of tobacco products in points of sale (77%). Two-thirds of respondents support a ban on flavored tobacco products (67%) and raising taxes to reduce affordability for children (65%). The introduction of standardized packaging is supported by 61% of respondents.

Researchers note the prevalence of tobacco product use among the youngest group of the population.

«The survey showed that it is the young population who notice tobacco and nicotine advertising the most – 73% of young people aged 18 – 29 years. This figure further decreases with each age group and drops to 19% among respondents aged 70 years and older, – said Shcherbatyuk.

According to him, this confirms that advertising of tobacco and nicotine products is aimed at the youngest age group.

It was noted that the demonstration of tobacco and nicotine products at points of sale is the main advertising channel for this products. 32% of respondents noted that they notice it. In second place are banner ads on the Internet (23%) and personal pages on social media (20%). 14% of respondents saw advertisements on the street.

Often respondents saw advertisements for traditional cigarettes and heated cigarettes (35%), 31% were exposed to advertisements for devices for heating tobacco, 24% – 24%. electronic cigarettes and another 10% – nicotine snus.

The survey was conducted in December 2023 as part of the regular “Omnibus” public organization “Life” together with researchers from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. The adult population over 18 years of age was surveyed. The study involved 2,009 people.

As Ukrinform reported, in Ukraine, tobacco smoking annually claims an average of 130 thousand lives.
