Brain surgery for severe epilepsy was performed for the first time in Ivano-Frankivsk

The KNP OKL of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Council reports this on Facebook , reports Ukrinform.

“For the first time in Ivano-Frankovsk, in the neurosurgery department of the regional clinical hospital, a two-stage brain surgery was performed for severe drug-resistant epilepsy,” reports the OKL.

According to their information, the operation was performed on a 21-year-old a young man who was tired of epileptic seizures from the age of three. He was absent. …After an MRI, the patient was diagnosed with a rare congenital pathology of the cerebral cortex. pachygyria,” is added to the OKL.

Here they claim that operations of this level have not been carried out in Ukraine until recently. Neurosurgeon Andrei Martyn performed a two-stage operation together with American colleagues Luke Tomicz and Carrie Muh.

«At the first stage, electrodes were installed on the surface of the main brain, after which epiactivity was recorded for three days to plan the volume of resection. The second stage was , in fact, resection of the affected part of the brain using intraoperative neuromonitoring,” experts state.

After the operation, the guy’s condition is satisfactory, there are no attacks at the moment.

As the agency reported,  in Lvov performed the first facial muscle plastic surgery in Ukraine.
