President Vladimir Zelensky signed the law “On amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine on the preservation of the gene pool of the Ukrainian people.”

This was reported on the parliament’s website, Ukrinform reports.

The law was developed with the aim of preserving the gene pool of the Ukrainian people, as well as regulating the issue of social protection of military personnel in terms of ensuring their right to biological paternity (maternity).

The law provides that in the event of a person’s death or recognition as deceased, his reproductive materials will be stored free of charge for three years from the date of death of this person.

After this period, further storage may be extended at the expense of another person determined at the disposal of the person regarding his own reproductive cells.

The document regulates that the individual whose reproductive cells are preserved has the right to dispose of them in the event of his death.

It is assumed that if the reproductive cells of a person who has made the appropriate order in the event of his death are used to conceive a child, this individual is recognized as the father or mother of the child thus born. the enactment of this law is the basis for the use of assisted reproductive technologies using these reproductive cells. As Ukrinform reported, on February 7, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on amendments to some legislative acts of Ukraine on the preservation of the gene pool of the Ukrainian people.
