The Ministry of Energy asks the SBU to find out who is spreading fake news about the accident at the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant

All nuclear power plants in the controlled territory are operating normally.

and the Defense Ministry and the Security Service “to take urgent measures to bring to justice” those who are spreading rumors about the accident at the South Ukrainian NPP.

This was reported on the website of the Ministry of Energy.

“The fake story about the “accident at the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant” was first thrown into the Ukrainian information space by Russian propaganda in response to its own attempts to hide the accident at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant, information about which appeared in the media earlier. Unfortunately, despite the official denial of the Center for Strategic Security, in Ukraine open manipulations began regarding the state of the nuclear power plant equipment,” the report says.

The Ministry of Energy notes that there was no shutdown of the power transformer at the station. If such an event were to occur, it would make it impossible to supply electricity and would actually lead to the need to shut down the nuclear unit.

Damage to other equipment does not affect the operation of the unit and can only have a short-term (within hours) impact on the ability to issue.

This is a direct consequence of targeted attacks by the Russians on energy infrastructure facilities and abnormal weather conditions. This situation cannot in any way be considered a “nuclear power plant accident.” The nuclear power unit is in working condition. Attempts by irresponsible politicians to speculate and spread outright manipulations at the nuclear power plant are unacceptable,” the ministry emphasized.

Where did the rumors about the accident at the PAES come from?
  • In mid-July, Ukraine had strict power outage schedules for several days. Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Center for Energy Research, wrote on Facebook that two transformers at the South Ukrainian NPP, probably due to the heat, failed and one of the power units was disconnected from the grid.
  • On July 18, the Center for Strategic Communications, based on information from NNEGC Energoatom, reported that Nuclear power plants of Ukraine, in particular the South Ukrainian NPP, were operating without technical violations and in normal mode.
  • The next day, Minister of Energy German Galushchenko on the hour Government issues in the Verkhovna Rada stated that “first this information appeared on Russian channels” and called it fake.
  • Note that a massive information attack in the Russian-language segment of online media on Westinghouse and Energoatom began back in 2021 , after signing agreements on the construction of new power units at the Khmelnytsky NPP. Then Energoatom categorically denied fakes about the shortcomings of the American AP1000 reactor technology and the corresponding Westinghouse reactor equipment, as well as false information that Ukrainian specialists were allegedly unable to build a new nuclear power unit using AP1000 technology.
  • After February 24, 2022, Energoatom completely stopped cooperation with Russia and, accordingly, the nuclear power plant had to be reoriented to use fuel from another manufacturer.
