From January to July 2025, Germany’s exports to Ukraine increased by nearly a third. According to preliminary data released by the Federal Statistical Office on August 11, the exports grew by 30.2%, surpassing 4.6 billion euros. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s exports to Germany decreased by 4.5%, totaling just over 1.5 billion euros, reports Baltimore Chronicle, citing Deutsche Welle.
Cathrina Claas-Mühlhäuser, chairwoman of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy (Ost-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft, OA), commented on these figures, emphasizing that supporting and rebuilding Ukraine remain central goals for European politics and economics. She added that Germany views strengthening cooperation with Ukraine as a long-term commitment to a future EU member state, benefiting both sides. At the same time, Claas-Mühlhäuser expressed concerns about a potential weakening of anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine due to recent attempts by the Kyiv government to strip the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) of their independence. She stated that the task of Ukrainian politics is to build trust, not undermine it.
According to the statistics, foreign trade with 29 partner countries of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Central Asia, grew by 2% in the first half of 2025, reaching 275 billion euros. “Trade with the East continues to gain momentum for the entire German economy,” said Claas-Mühlhäuser, adding that Germany’s exports to the region have notably increased despite general trends.
Particular attention is being paid to Poland, which is becoming an increasingly important trading partner for Germany. In the first half of 2025, the bilateral trade volume reached a record 90 billion euros, a 5.4% increase compared to the previous half-year. Germany’s exports to Poland grew by 5.7%, while Polish imports rose by 5.2%. Poland is currently the fifth-largest trading partner of Germany, following France, with a trade volume of 92.6 billion euros.
