Food supplies will be carried out in cooperation with international organizations and partners.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has instructed the government to develop mechanisms for grain supplies to Syria to prevent a food crisis in the country. Earlier, Russian wheat supplies to Syria were suspended due to Moscow's uncertainty about the new government.
The Ukrainian president announced assistance to Syria in his address on Saturday, December 14.
“We are ready to help Syria prevent a food crisis. In particular, thanks to the humanitarian program “Grain from Ukraine”. I have instructed the government to establish food supplies in cooperation with international organizations and partners who can provide assistance,” he said.
President Zelensky called on the international community to join efforts to stabilize the situation in Syria so that the war, which has been supported by Russia and Iran for more than a decade, can finally end.
“This is important for Ukraine: the calmer the situation is in such regions, the more actively the world will be able to help us establish peace,” he stressed.
Earlier, Reuters reported that Russian wheat deliveries to Syria had been suspended due to uncertainty about the new government and delays in payments.
Shipping data showed that two ships carrying Russian wheat destined for Syria had not reached their destinations.
Russia was a key supporter of Bashar al-Assad, supplying wheat to the country through complex financial and logistical mechanisms, bypassing Western sanctions imposed on both Syria and Russia.
Recall that after the fall of the dictatorial regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria, to whom the Kremlin provided military and political support, Russia is trying to keep both of its large military bases in the country: the Khmeimim air base in Latakia province and the Tartus naval base on the Mediterranean coast.
