Ukraine to export electricity to Moldova on the night of January 2 to cover the deficit
Moldovan state-owned company Energocom reported that it purchased the electricity needed to cover the deficit on January 2. The company noted that electricity will be supplied from Ukraine at night.
This is reported by the Moldovan publication NewsMaker.
“We will additionally purchase electricity from Ukrainian “Energoatom” – at night, when our colleagues have excess energy and they can export it,” the company said.
Ukrainian “Energoatom” has not yet commented on this information.
Recall that at 7.00 am on January 1, 2025, Ukraine officially stopped transporting Russian gas through its own gas transmission system.
On December 16, a state of emergency was introduced in the energy sector in Moldova. On December 31, the Ministry of Energy reported that in January 2025, Moldova will import most of its electricity from neighboring Romania, and 30% will be provided by local thermal power plants.
The authorities in the unrecognized Transnistria have also introduced a state of emergency. After the gas supply was cut off there on January 1, central heating in the cities was turned off, and gas was left only for cooking for 20 days.
Moldavskaya GRES, which had previously operated on natural gas since January 1, 2025, is switching to coal-fired power generation. On December 31, it was reported that the Moldavskaya GRES, located in Transnistria, would suspend electricity supply to Moldova from January 1. This station provides 80% of the country's electricity needs.
