There is a possibility of exporting Azerbaijani gas to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system.
Ukraine is ready to transport gas through its territory to Slovakia and other European countries, provided that this gas is not Russian.
This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a joint press conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
He noted that Ukraine has never refused to transit gas from other countries, but not from Russia.
“I said: no, Russian gas – the contract will not be extended! Legally, we are not violating anything. Morally, we are absolutely morally right. Legally and morally. And we do not allow Russians to earn money,” Zelensky said.
He also spoke about his meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Davos, where the leaders discussed the possibility of exporting Azerbaijani gas to Europe.
According to Zelensky, gas production in Azerbaijan is “very high” and amounts to about 40 billion cubic meters, of which it uses 14-15 billion for its own needs.
“Today, the export capacity [in Azerbaijan] is 25 billion cubic meters. And we talked to him so that he could export. By the way, he exports his gas to many countries. We can also use our infrastructure if other countries, including those in Eastern Europe, really need gas, and not Russian gas,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.
Zelensky noted that Ukraine and Azerbaijan have excellent relations, so it is possible to quickly sign a contract and establish supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Slovakia, Moldova, and other European countries.
As previously reported, on January 1 at 07:00, Ukraine stopped transporting Russian natural gas through its territory in the interests of national security.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Bratislava would introduce “adequate measures” due to the cessation of gas transit from the Russian Federation.
Recall that earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico brazenly refused the offer to adapt the country to the absence of Russian gas transit and resorted to lies.
