Ukraine's public debt sets new historical record

The public debt by the end of 2024 increased by 1.46 trillion.

According to the results of last year, the public and publicly guaranteed debt of Ukraine increased in hryvnia equivalent by 1.46 trillion UAH and as of December 31, its level reached 6.98 trillion UAH, or $166.06 billion UAH.

This was reported by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.

In dollar equivalent, the public and publicly guaranteed debt increased over the entire year by $20.74 billion.

The Ministry specified that the public debt amounted to UAH 6.69 trillion ($159.20 billion), which is 95.87% of the total amount of UAH 86 trillion ($44.32 billion). The debt guaranteed by the state amounted to UAH 288.51 billion ($6.86 billion).

The Ministry of Finance noted that despite the growth of the public debt, debt obligations remain under control, and their volume is determined in accordance with the National Bank exchange rate.

Earlier, journalists from Forbes Ukraine wrote that in April 2024, the public debt of Ukraine amounted to 92% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, the amount of borrowing began to grow in order to finance the “martial law budget”. Already in 2023, analysts have established that the total volume of public debt has already exceeded the mark of 5.5 trillion hryvnia, or 84% of GDP.

Journalists point out that the growth of debt is also due to the weakening of the hryvnia exchange rate against the world's leading currencies. This fluctuation has led to an increase in the hryvnia scale of debts in foreign currency.
