NNEGC Energoatom and the American company Westinghouse have agreed to work together to enhance the safety of future power units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant and to adapt fuel for them.

It is noted that during the meeting, the management of Energoatom and Westinghouse discussed key aspects of improving the safety of Khmelnitsky NPP power units No. 3 and No. 4.
“Westinghouse is currently conducting a gap analysis of the X3, X4 project to implement modern safety systems, in particular, long-term heat removal from the sealed enclosure of the reactor compartment,” the statement said.
At the same time, it is planned to achieve the safety level of modern AP1000 reactors from Westinghouse at the completed power units.
“At the meeting, we agreed to continue work on adapting Westinghouse fuel for power units X3 and X4, including the option of an 18-month refueling cycle,” added the operator of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant.
A joint team of specialists from Energoatom and Westinghouse will work on these projects.
As reported, on February 11, the Verkhovna Rada supported the purchase of Russian-made equipment from Bulgaria to complete the construction of two power units at the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant. The corresponding amendment was made to bill No. 11392, which previously provided for simplified access to power grids for businesses and was voted for in the first reading. There were no provisions on simplified access to grids in the second reading.
Bill No. 11392 also does not directly provide permission for the completion of power units No. 3 and No. 4 at the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant – a separate law would need to be passed for this.
