The price of flour has changed sharply in Ukraine: economists have named the reason

In March, flour suddenly became cheaper, despite stable prices for raw materials.

In Ukraine, the average price of wheat flour fell by 15.4% during March. The largest Ukrainian supermarket chains sell wheat flour, depending on the variety and manufacturer, at a price of 18 to 33 hryvnia per kilogram. At the same time, since the beginning of 2025, bread prices have remained virtually unchanged.

This is discussed in the results of the monthly monitoring of prices for products by the association “Ukrainian Club of Agrarian Business” (UCAB).

According to the UCAB, in January-February of this year, the average price of flour for end consumers was 30.5 UAH/kg. But in March, prices began to fall. Thus, at the beginning of the month, the average price fell to 27.7 UAH/kg, and two weeks later it fell to 25.8 UAH/kg.

However, compared to 2024, the average price of flour has increased by more than 11%. That is, a year ago it was 23.2 UAH/kg.

“The change in price [for wheat flour – ed.] could be a decision by retail chains to offer discounts before the Easter holidays, since prices for wheat [raw materials – ed.] remain constant throughout the month,” the association noted.

Despite fluctuations in flour prices, bread and bakery products are sold at the same prices as at the beginning of the year. A 450 g loaf costs an average of UAH 29.9. Monitoring of the largest supermarkets showed a price range from UAH 26.7 to UAH 39.2. But a year later, a loaf in stores has risen in price by more than a quarter (25.63%). Last March, its average price was UAH 23.8.

Let us remind you that the cost of eggs in Ukraine will change in the near future. It is expected that the decrease in demand after Easter will lead to a decrease in prices.
