What we know

After releasing several SUVs and an unusual minivan, Volvo is developing another electric car. This time it's a sedan.

A photo from a factory in eastern China appeared on the Volvo intranet yesterday, where you can see a car hidden under a cover with the inscription “Confidential” – the new V551 sedan (ES90).

The sedan is described in an internal note as the brand’s first global model , the development of which was led by an engineering team in Shanghai (the research center is located here). The team working on the new car consists of specialists from China and Sweden.

“This brings us one step closer to delivering a new finished vehicle to our customers. …We can use it for tests, it plays a decisive role in the V551 development process,” comments Göran Larsson, technical manager of the V551 project.

It was previously known that the new sedan will be developed on the same SPA2 platform, as the company's electric crossover EX90. The Volvo ES90 will allegedly have a length of 4.99 meters, a height of 1.547 meters and a width of 1.945 meters, which is comparable to car competitors BMW i5, Mercedes EQE and the future Audi A6 E-Tron.

The weight of the sedan is approximately 2600 kilograms (with dual-wheel drive) and 2,500 kilograms (for a model with a single engine and rear-wheel drive). The battery is expected to have a capacity of 111 kWh (same as the EX90). The range is predicted to be 600 kilometers for the single-engine model. Serial production is expected to start in May 2024.
