The decision was made with 26 votes in favor, another 10 committee members were against, one abstained.
The proposal provides for the extension of the temporary suspension of import duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural exports to the EU for another year, from June 6, 2024 to June 5 2025.
At the same time, the legislation gives the European Commission the power to “take prompt action and introduce any necessary measures in the event of significant disruptions on the EU market or on the markets of one or more EU countries due to Ukrainian imports.”
During the In a separate vote on Thursday, the committee, with 28 votes in favor, two against and 6 abstentions, agreed that all duties on imports from Moldova should be suspended for another year.
The European Parliament is expected to vote for this position in the first reading at the plenary meeting next week. Next, the Council will officially approve the regulation, and it will come into force after publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka, commenting on the decision of the EP Committee, noted that a week ago more than 100 amendments were submitted to the European Commission’s proposal in the Agrarian and Trade Committee, almost all of which proposed narrowing access to the EU market for Ukrainian products.
“Due to active work with member states – and primarily Poland, with European institutions and MEPs, it was possible to reduce the number of voters up to two edits. And they didn’t get enough votes,” Kachka noted.
