Since June 2023, Ukraine has been a candidate for EU membership and expansion Publishing external sector statistics in euros and national currencies is best practice for candidate countries.
In particular, EU accession candidates that have achieved this status by 2022 have already moved to publishing data in euros (except Turkey).
Publication of external sector statistics in euros and hryvnia was scheduled to begin in March 2022, starting with data for 2021. However, such publication was delayed due to problems with data as a result of the outbreak of a full-scale war.
Currently, the program for the development of official statistics until 2028 provides for the introduction of the calculation and publication of external sector statistics in euros in 2024. At the same time, the statistical description of the data, their analysis and forecast will continue to be published in US dollars.
As reported, the National Bank of Ukraine may also consider the advisability of pegging the hryvnia exchange rate to the euro instead of the US dollar.
