“For January-February 2024, the growth in the volume of cash currency outside banks was estimated at $3.1 billion, for the corresponding period in 2023 – at $2 1 billion,” the message says.
The NBU does not publish absolute figures, but preliminary open data now shows that this amount exceeds $120 billion.
At the same time, ex- Member of the NBU Council Vitaly Shapran noted the imperfection of NBU statistics, which do not quite correctly take into account the outflow of cash currency from Ukraine. According to his calculations, “the population and business have no more than $60 billion in their hands.”
The volume of cash foreign currency that banks imported into Ukraine in February 2024 amounted to $1.027 billion. This is 45% less than record volume for ten years in January ($1.864 billion).
