China's Ministry of Commerce said the complaint was intended to “protect the interests of the electric vehicle industry and cooperation in the global green transformation,” and that the EU tariffs violated WTO rules.
Earlier, the EU imposed temporary tariffs of up to 37.6% on electric cars made in China, saying they were unfairly treated benefit from state subsidies. China says its support for electric vehicles complies with WTO rules.
Both sides have until early November to try to resolve their differences, after which the temporary tariffs will become official.
The European Commission will impose duties of 17.4% on Chinese electric cars BYD, 19.9% on Geely, and 37.6% on SAIC.
Products from other electric car makers that cooperated with the investigation but did not provide the necessary samples will be subject to an average duty of 20.8%.
The duty on products from other Chinese companies that refused to cooperate with the investigation will be 37.6%.
