During the study conducted by scientists, 34 volunteers underwent screening colonoscopy. Experts were able to obtain 97 biopsies of the colon mucosa from different areas. These figures were compared with the results of a questionnaire about the participants' diet.
It turned out that people who consumed coffee heavily (more than 82.9 milligrams daily) had more anti-inflammatory bacteria in their gut, such as Faecalibacterium and Roseburia, and in turn, the number of potentially harmful bacteria Erysipelatoclostridium was reduced.
Researchers explain that this ratio of microorganisms improves the health of the intestines. They associate stronger immunity and the body's protection from dangerous diseases with an improvement in the composition of the intestinal microbiome.
«This composition and structure of the intestinal microbiota plays an important role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and liver diseases», — the authors of the work reported.
