The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced his intention to leave his post early, before the end of this year, when his mandate was supposed to end.
He announced that he had made this decision , since he intends to join the Belgian liberal party MR — Mouvement Réformateur (Reform Movement) to take part in the elections to the European Parliament.
«I have decided to stand in the European elections in 2024. At the end of June or beginning of July, the European Council will be able to foresee this and decide on a successor, said Charles Michel.
However, Michel did not specify what role he wants to fulfill in the European Parliament.
«I want to serve where I can be useful. I have no other ambitions. I want to play an active role in the European debate and help advance the Europe 2030 project. This will require reforms,” he concluded.
