UN Deputy Secretary General Rosemary DiCarlo commented on the official information of the Russian authorities that there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, 6 Russian crew members and 3 Russian military personnel on board the plane.
She noted that The United Nations cannot establish whether Ukrainian prisoners of war were on board the Il-76 plane shot down in the Belgorod region.
At the same time, DiCarlo noted that, according to the Ukrainian side, the aircraft could have been transporting missiles for the military systems of the Russian Federation. The UN representative also recalled that official Kyiv called for an international investigation into the incident.
«The UN is not able to verify these reports or the circumstances of the disaster. What is clear is that the incident occurred in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war», — says a statement by the UN Deputy Secretary General.
At the same time, DiCarlo emphasized that in recent weeks the scale and intensity of attacks on Ukrainian territory have increased, which indicates a dangerous trajectory of the war.
