The birth rate has decreased in Ukraine: how many children were born in 2023

In 2023, 32% fewer children were born in Ukraine than in 2021. In particular, 187,387 babies were born.

It is noted that most children were born in the capital of Ukraine, although a rapid decline in the birth rate was recorded there. Consequently, over the past year, 19,979 babies were born in Kyiv. This is 33% less than in 2021.

Also, a decline in the birth rate occurred in the Lviv region, where 16,638 children were born in 2023. The Dnepropetrovsk region is not far behind in this indicator; 14,433 babies were born there.

The least number of children were born in the Kherson region — 452 children.

At the same time, compared to the first year of full-scale, last year there were more children also in the front-line territories of Nikolaev (+5%) and Kharkov (+3%) regions. And the greatest decline in the birth rate with a mark of -18% was recorded in the Poltava region.
