Why the lyrics of Western performers have become simpler: recent research conducted by Austrian and German scientists has led to intriguing conclusions regarding the evolution of song lyrics in English.
This information was reported by the scientific journal Scientific Reports, reports URA-Inform “.
The work of scientists
Experts analyzed the lyrics of songs in five popular genres – rap, pop, country, rhythm and blues and rock, from 1980 to 2020. The study was based on data from two large platforms: Genius, one of the world's largest collections of songs and lyrics, and Last.fm, a service where users can listen to music. Using specialized programs for statistical analysis, more than 350 thousand songs were analyzed in order to identify the characteristic features of the texts.
Result
The results showed that, in general, song lyrics in all genres studied became simpler and more monotonous. The decline in vocabulary diversity was especially noticeable in rap and rock. Scientists believe this may be due to changes in music listening, as songs are now often heard as background sound. Thus, experts answered the question of why the lyrics of songs by Western performers have become simpler.
Another fact
The study also found that songs became more emotional over the study period. Rappers have more emotionally charged words in their lyrics, with both positive and negative connotations. At the same time, the lyrics of pop, blues and country artists became more negative. In addition, an increase in the use of aggressive words was revealed in texts of all genres studied.
