Italian President Sergio Mattarella during the UN General Assembly expressed the opinion that peace in Ukraine will become possible only after the restoration of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
The AP reports this, reports URA-Inform.
Mattarella noted that Italy and its international partners support Ukraine, insisting on the principle of solidarity with states under attack in violation of the UN Charter.
“No country has the right to violate the principles of international law. The aggressor must be restrained by the most powerful sanctions,” — Mattarella noted.
He emphasized that the war in Ukraine has global consequences, leading to shortages of food and energy, especially in certain regions of Africa.
Mattarella also said that after the end of the Cold War the peace dividends that had contributed to development were lost as the Kremlin brought peace back by starting a new armed race.
The Italian leader added that the international community, including Italy and its partners, is committed to achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution to the conflict in Ukraine on the basis of the principles of international law and the UN Charter.
