Defenders of Ukraine, who have been on the front lines for a long time, are forced to put aside their emotional suffering and experiences, as stated by psychiatrist Yulia Brockdorf
She announced this in an interview for Business Insider, reports URA-Inform.
«Losses, injuries, constant pain – all this overlaps. You have to put your emotions aside because your main task is to get your job done» — Brockdorff noted.
According to her, the natural process of processing emotions and grief is pushed into the background to allow soldiers to continue to fight for their country.
Since the beginning of a full-scale conflict Brockdorff made several trips to Ukraine, providing consultations and medical equipment to soldiers. She is also the co-founder of DAWN, an organization that provides aid to Ukraine. Julia's last visit was in March of this year.
Brockdorff noted that warriors often seem detached from death.
« Very often they say that “this is war, this happens.” When grief is not experienced immediately, it accumulates, making it more difficult to bear in the future,» – she explained.
Some military personnel can make it through war without serious injury, while others may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) of varying severity. Foreign volunteers participating in the defense of Ukraine confirm that losses are inevitable and difficult to survive.
«We lose people almost every week. Often there is no time to mourn the dead, and you just have to continue doing your job» – they said.
Kiev psychotherapist Vladislav Matrenitsky, working with Ukrainian veterans, noticed that some of them, experiencing PTSD, showed increased vigilance, agitation and anxiety. These symptoms can greatly affect their daily lives and require professional help.
The emotional and psychological consequences of war for Ukrainian defenders are a serious challenge that requires attention and support from both professionals and society at large.
Let us remind you how many Ukrainians will not have time to update the data in the TCC: the people's deputy was stunned by the figure.
