Double Olympic medalist Mykhailo Romanchuk has withdrawn from the second qualification of the Olympic Games in Paris.
This information was reported by Suspilne, as reported by URA-Inform.
The Ukrainian will not swim the 1,500-meter freestyle , in which he is a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics. Journalists learned that the reason for this was illness: the day before the start, he developed a fever.
Withdrawal from the 1500-meter freestyle means the end of Romanchuk's performance at the Olympic Games. Even before the trip to Paris, he withdrew from the 400-meter distance, in which he met the Olympic standard, but he explained this decision by his desire to focus on the main events.
The only distance that Romanchuk swam at the Olympics in Paris was the 800-meter freestyle. The Ukrainian swimmer competed in it as a bronze medalist of the Tokyo Games and the holder of an Olympic record, but ultimately did not qualify.
Mykhailo Romanchuk became another Ukrainian athlete who spoke about the disease at the Olympics. In addition to him, other swimmers, Oleksandr Zheltyakov and Vladislav Bukhov, competed with the disease. Track and field athlete Olha Korsun also spoke about her high temperature, although she competed in the triple jump qualification.
For Romanchuk, the 2024 Olympics were the third in his career. Only at the Tokyo Games did the Ukrainian swimmer receive awards: silver in the 1500-meter freestyle and bronze in the 800-meter.
Thus, the Ukrainian swimming team in full force finished its performances at the Olympic Games. The best result of the swimmers was the semi-final of Vladislav Bukhov in the 50-meter freestyle, while the rest of the Ukrainian athletes did not qualify for their distances.
Recall that earlier it was reported, the first scandal: South Korean swimmers left the Olympic Village in protest.
