According to the Russian side, Ukrainian special services were planning an attack on Navy Day on July 28, when President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Andrei Belousov took part in the parade in St. Petersburg.
This information was reported by & #171;Military», reports “URA-Inform”.
Russia claims that it has asked the United States to persuade Ukraine not to attack military facilities on that day. This information was confirmed by the American publication The New York Times, citing three unnamed American officials.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Belousov personally contacted US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about this matter.
«Sergey Ryabkov added that the telephone conversation between the two ministers allegedly had a positive result for Russia and helped to avoid an escalation spiral,» the media reported.
According to Ryabkov, Austin was surprised by this news, but took it seriously. Subsequently, Washington allegedly contacted Kiev and asked to abandon the planned operation. However, it is still unclear whether Ukraine really intended to carry out such an operation, as the Russian side claims.
The Russian diplomat also stated that if this Ukrainian operation had been carried out, it could have led to an «uncontrolled conflict» between Russia and the United States. At the same time, on July 28, on «Russian Navy Day» drones of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine successfully attacked various targets in Russia.
