The recent powerful earthquake that occurred in the seismically active Vrancea zone in Romania was also felt in Ukraine, especially in the Odessa region. Residents of the region report seeing chandeliers swinging, and small objects on shelves starting to ring and move.
This was reported by URA-Inform, citing TSN.
Local authorities rushed to reassure the population, stating that the earthquake did not cause serious consequences for the region.
“No damage to structures or injuries to people as a result of the tremors were recorded,” the official reports noted.
Seismologist Oleksandr Kendzera noted that the earthquake had its epicenter in the Vrancea zone, which is considered one of the most dangerous in Europe, but this time it did not pose a serious threat to Ukraine. However, he stressed that the risk of similar events in the future remains high.
“The presence of a zone like Vrancea nearby indicates that earthquakes may occur in Ukraine. In order to prepare for possible tremors, the seismic zoning map plays an important role. According to this map, the greatest intensity of earthquakes from Vrancea on the territory of Ukraine can reach 7 points,” the expert explained.
He also added that the soils of the southwestern part of the Odessa region are especially vulnerable to seismic vibrations. According to Kendziora, it is impossible to predict the exact time and strength of an earthquake, although the probability of their occurrence always exists.
“It is difficult to predict earthquakes, but there is no doubt that they can happen,” Kendziora concluded.
Recall that Ukrenergo asked the people to know whether there will be outages on September 18.
