President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky expects to receive an invitation to NATO from US President Joe Biden before the presidential term is confirmed.
This was reported by URA-Inform, citing Le Monde.
The source notes that this proposal is part of his extensive “victory plan” that the Ukrainian president intends to present in Washington.
According to information provided by columnist Sylvie Kauffmann, Zelenskyy is seeking to convince Biden to take decisive measures to speed up the end of the war and allow Kyiv to negotiate from a strong position. He has developed two plans – a “peace plan” and a “victory plan” that will be presented not only to Biden, but also to the two presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, as well as to the US Congress.
The “peace plan” aims to restore peace, while the “victory plan” focuses on strengthening Ukraine after the peace agreement. Zelensky has made it clear that he does not want to make any forced decisions. Instead, he hopes for a positive decision on Ukraine's membership in NATO.
According to the observer, Zelensky believes that an invitation to NATO would be an important step to ensure Ukraine's security and strengthen its position after the end of the war. However, the problem is that Biden, being a man of the Cold War, is concerned about the possibility of an escalation of the conflict and believes that Ukraine's membership in NATO could lead to World War III. Therefore, his strategy is to keep Ukraine in a moderate mode to avoid further escalation of the situation.
“Everything depends on Biden's decision,” Zelensky commented in an interview with Le Monde.
