The National Bank of Ukraine proposed Parliament to replace the name of the small change coin “kopeck” with “step”.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Danil Getmantsev.
The chairman of the parliamentary committee on finance, Danil Getmantsev, published a letter from the head of the NBU, Andriy Pyshny, addressed to the speaker, Ruslan Stefanchuk, in his Telegram channel with a request to support this initiative to “restore historical justice” and return the original Ukrainian name of the coin.
It is noted that the National Bank made this decision based on research into the history of monetary circulation in Ukraine:
«Together with recognized experts in the field of history, numismatics, banking, art history, archeology and linguistics, we came to the undeniable conclusion that the name of a small coin such as «kopeck» is alien to our country and, in fact, a — symbol of the Russian occupation of Ukraine for at least the past three centuries. At the same time, returning to the original Ukrainian name «step» will allow us to revive national traditions in the nomination of money».
According to Pyshnyi, the renaming will not entail additional costs for the NBU. The new coin — “step” — will be gradually introduced into circulation, without requiring the immediate withdrawal of kopecks. In 2025, it is planned to issue 20 million new coins.
