British Intelligence explained why large-scale purges of officials are taking place in Russia.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to the UK Ministry of Defense.
The UK Ministry of Defence, citing intelligence data, reported that there has been an increase in the number of corruption allegations against Russian officials in the Ministry of Defence and other security agencies. Many of them have subsequently been dismissed from their positions.
The department noted that on October 7, the prosecutor's office brought additional charges against former Deputy Minister of Defence Timur Ivanov, who had previously been notified of suspicion in April 2024.
The first of these cases concerns the likely embezzlement of 200 million roubles during the purchase of two vessels for the Kerch Strait ferry service, which were subsequently damaged during the fighting. The other is about the theft of three billion roubles from the Interkommerts bank.
British intelligence said charges were continuing to be levelled against former Russian defence officials in what appeared to be a wider crackdown on embezzlement by officials below the executive or cabinet level.
Russian media have confirmed that eight officials with general rank have been dismissed from agencies including the Investigative Committee, the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Federal Penitentiary Service. Independent journalists have suggested that this is in connection with future corruption charges.
“If true, this is a potential indicator that the fight against corruption is moving beyond its previous narrow focus on the defence sector,” — concluded in the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain.
