The Russian army is advancing in Donbass, capturing more and more territory, but there is an even more “valuable prize” for the Russian Federation at the front.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to the Financial Times.
The head of the Kherson OVA, Alexander Prokudin, said that the Russians are planning to cross the Dnieper in boats with the aim of attacking Kherson.
“Russia wants to launch another offensive here,” Prokudin said.
According to him, the Russians have assembled “300 boats to cross the river.” Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army “South,” said that the Russians continue to try to seize islands on the Dnieper to get closer to the western bank of Kherson.
They recently carried out a large-scale attack on Kazatsky Island, near Nova Kakhovka. Ukrainian officials suspect that the attack on Kherson is part of Russia's plan to increase pressure on Kyiv before Trump's arrival.
Kherson is currently under constant attack by drones hunting for civilians. This has accelerated the exodus of the city's population. According to the FT, only 60,000 of the pre-war 250,000 remain. In the region, 158,000 people remained from a million.
Kherson would have become an even more valuable prize for Russia, the FT notes, recalling that the city became the first regional capital of Ukraine to be captured by Russian troops after a full-scale invasion in February 2022, and spent nine months under occupation.
