People with a rare virus – herpes zoster, known as shingles, are being hospitalized in Lviv. Such a number of patients with this disease has not been recorded before.
According to Tamila Aleksanyan, head of the fourth diagnostic department of the infectious diseases hospital, five patients with a diagnosis of herpes zoster are currently being treated in the department.
Among those hospitalized are men aged 34, 65 and 70, as well as two women – one is 70 years old and the other is over 60. One woman has been in the hospital for two weeks. Treatment for lichen lasts an average of two to three weeks – all patients in the hospital began antiviral therapy on time.
The virus can cause complications
“Herpes manifests itself in the form of blistering rashes, most often on the chest, always on one side, less often on the head or arms and legs. The rash appears along the course of the nerve: as it passes through the skin, so the rash appears. The disease is accompanied by a serious condition, severe pain that can last a long time, as well as severe complications such as meningitis or encephalitis. At first, the affected area hurts, itches, then the crusts dry up, peel off, the wounds can ooze, and then all this is accompanied by significant pain,” Aleksanyan noted.
The head of the infectious diseases department also reported that this disease is caused by the herpes virus, which remains in the human body after chickenpox in childhood. It manifests itself mainly in people with reduced immunity, overwork, or in the case of the development of oncological processes that are not yet noticeable. Modern medicine allows you to effectively cure this disease, but it can take a long time.
