Hetty Green was officially listed in the Guinness Book of Records as “the stingiest woman in history.”
This was reported by “URA-Inform” with reference to Time-forex.
Born in America in 1835, Hetty was reportedly the only daughter of a wealthy businessman. She inherited about $7.5 million from her father (billions in 2024 dollars). At age twenty-one, she moved to New York City to invest in Wall Street, earning her the nickname “The Wicked Witch of Wall Street.”
Hettie married a millionaire but lived frugally, subsisting on leftover cakes and broken cookies from grocery stores and arguing daily for a free bone for her dog. She was extremely stingy, wearing the same underwear she made at age sixteen until her death.
She spent next to nothing, reportedly never using hot water, wearing the same black dress until it fell apart, and eating pies that cost only two cents. When her son broke his leg, she delayed getting it treated so as not to spend money, which led to the leg being amputated.
Hettie Green died in 1916 at age 81 in New York City and was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as “the stingiest person in the world.” She died of a stroke after arguing with her maid over a small pay raise.
Despite her stinginess, Hetty left behind a huge fortune. Her children were generous, and her daughter even built a free hospital with the money she inherited.
Recall that earlier it was reported about a love record: the oldest couple in the world legalized their relationship (photo).
