Symptoms strokes in women can be both typical and less obvious, which makes it difficult to detect them in a timely manner.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Ua-novosti.
Doctors noted , that the risk of stroke in women increases with age: after 75 years, the risk increases significantly. At this age, the number of women who have suffered a stroke exceeds the same indicator among men.
However, according to doctors, such statistics are partly due to the higher life expectancy of women. At the same time, they suffer strokes more severely.
Differences in stroke in women and men
- In women, brain damage from stroke is more serious.
- Cardiac fibrillation, one of the key risk factors, is more common in women.
- Women die more often from strokes than men.
- Recovery from stroke in women is more difficult, often accompanied by depression.
Women may experience typical symptoms of a stroke, such as:
- numbness on one side of the body (for example, half of the face, an arm, or a leg);
- muscle weakness;
- speech problems;
- double vision.
“An acute stroke usually causes 'minus symptoms', i.e. the cessation of body functions that worked before – deafness, weakness, visual field restriction and the absence of 'plus symptoms', i.e. no pain except headaches,” said Dr. Christian Nolte, an expert at the Stroke Research Center in Berlin.
Experts have warned that hormones are a specific risk factor for women. Those who take hormonal drugs or undergo hormone replacement therapy are at increased risk. This is especially true for women who smoke or suffer from migraines – the combination of these factors significantly increases the likelihood of a stroke.
Understanding the characteristics of stroke in women and paying attention to specific risks, such as hormonal levels and age-related changes, allows you to respond to warning signs in a timely manner. It is important for women to regularly consult with a doctor and monitor their health to minimize risks.
Recall that earlier it was reported on how not to miss a “silent heart attack”: what to pay attention to.
