Alexander Usyk has become a dominant figure in the heavyweight division, and now it is becoming increasingly difficult for him to find a worthy opponent.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to Xsport.ua.
British boxer Tyson Fury was long considered the last real competitor for the Ukrainian. However, in the first fight Fury managed to create problems for Usyk, but in the second fight the Ukrainian demonstrated absolute superiority.
After these two victories, the boxing world began to discuss possible future opponents for Usyk. One of the candidates was the Briton Daniel Dubois, the IBF world champion. This title is still missing from Usyk's collection, and a fight to unify all the belts would look like a logical step.
However, due to the IBF title being abandoned after preparing for the rematch with Fury and the inability to defend the belt, it was contested between Dubois and Joshua. Despite this, most experts consider the fight between Usyk and Dubois unlikely and not very attractive, since the Ukrainian has a clear advantage.
In this regard, Eddie Hearn, the head of Matchroom Boxing, suggested that Usyk consider a fight with the world champion in the cruiserweight division, Australian Jay Opetaia, who holds the IBF and The Ring titles. Hearn is confident that Opetaia could be a worthy opponent for Usyk, unlike Dubois, who, according to the promoter, will not be able to compete with the Ukrainian in a rematch.
«In my opinion, a fight with Jay Opetaia is the only option,— he said.
At the same time, he added that the Australian boxer must first deserve this fight by defending his title in a fight with David Nyika.
In turn, Usyk made an unexpected statement about his plans for the future.
