How to slow down brain aging: scientists have found out what should be in the diet

New study finds connection between the consumption of polyphenol-rich foods and the slowing of age-related degradation of cognitive functions of the brain.

Polyphenols contained in such products protect neural cells and maintain a healthy gut microbiome, which together help maintain mental clarity.

The study followed the cognitive health of 842 people without dementia for 12 years. Participants underwent regular neuropsychological tests, allowing us to assess changes in their mental abilities. The results showed that a diet rich in polyphenols was associated with slower cognitive decline.

Key foods and drinks highlighted by the researchers:

  • Mushrooms.
  • Red wine (in moderation).
  • Coffee.
  • Cocoa.
  • < li>Dark chocolate.

Researchers explain that the polyphenols in these foods protect the brain from oxidative stress, one of the main factors of aging. Additionally, these substances support a healthy balance of the gut microbiome, which plays an important role in cognitive processes.
