US President Donald Trump said that military actions in Ukraine could end in the near future. He made this statement on February 12 after a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin. According to the American leader, the Russian president is allegedly interested in ending the conflict, but on his own terms.
This was reported by URA-Inform, citing CNN.
During a meeting with journalists in the Oval Office, Trump noted that the idea of a ceasefire was discussed during the conversation.
«We talked about the possibility of a ceasefire to stop the killing. I think it could happen in the near future,» he said.
At the same time, Trump stressed that Putin does not want a temporary respite in the fighting, after which the war will flare up with renewed vigor.
«He was very firm on one thing: if this ends, he wants it to end,» the US President added.
When asked whether Ukraine would participate in discussing the terms of the ceasefire, Trump answered evasively. He only noted that «their people are being killed, and they must reach a peace agreement.» He also stressed that he does not consider the exclusion of Volodymyr Zelensky from the negotiation process a serious problem.
It is not yet known what specific steps will be taken to achieve a ceasefire. However, the US President's statement has already sparked heated discussions in political circles. Many experts believe that without Ukraine's participation, any agreements will be short-lived.
We will separately recall how the US reacted to Trump's call to Putin.
