Following a telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Ukraine's European allies expressed concern. The foreign ministers of several countries issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity and stressing the importance of Europe's participation in any future negotiations.
This was reported by URA-Inform, citing the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
The foreign ministers of Ukraine, France, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany and EU representatives stressed their readiness to increase assistance to Ukraine. “We are ready to strengthen support for Ukraine and will stand by its side until a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace is achieved,” the statement said.
At the same time, the European leaders stated that any negotiations on the future of Ukraine should take place with its direct participation.
«We look forward to discussing the way forward together with our American partners. Our common goal is to strengthen Ukraine's position,» the ministers noted.
Europe also stressed the need to ensure long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. The statement says that sustainable peace in the region is necessary for the stability of the entire Euro-Atlantic system. «The security of Europe is our collective responsibility, and we will continue to work to strengthen our defense capability,» the foreign ministers emphasized.
The European leaders expressed their readiness to participate in any discussions related to the settlement of the conflict. At the same time, the question remains open about what Trump's position will be on the participation of Ukraine and its allies in negotiations with Russia.
