Players around the world continue to wait for news about the possible release of The Last of Us Part III, but the latest statements from Neil Druckmann, head of Naughty Dog, make it clear that the third part may never see the light of day.

URA-Inform reports this, citing variety.com.

In a recent interview, the series' creative director gave an ambiguous answer to a question about the franchise's continuation. “Don't count on a sequel to The Last of Us. Maybe that's where it ends,” Druckmann said. His words sparked a lot of discussion among fans, as there had been rumors that the game was already in development and the script was almost ready.

While there is no official announcement, Druckmann has previously mentioned that he has a concept that would combine all three parts into one story. However, it is unknown whether this is planned as a new game or perhaps a TV adaptation.

Rumors are that Ellie will once again be the main character if a third installment is released, but part of the plot will be dedicated to new survivors, not just familiar characters. However, without official confirmation, one can only guess in what direction the franchise may develop.

While the fate of the game series remains in doubt, HBO's The Last of Us is making steady progress. The first season received high marks and was hailed as one of the best video game adaptations ever. The second season is already scheduled for release on April 13 and will introduce viewers to Abby, a character who caused much controversy in The Last of Us Part II.

Fans can only wait for official news from Naughty Dog. Perhaps the franchise will continue in another form, but for now, the fate of The Last of Us 3 remains uncertain.
