With age, the processes of oxidative damage intensify in the human body, which also affects the retina. Scientists have found that oxidative stress destroys saturated lipids that are part of cell membranes. This leads to the development of degenerative changes, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The Role of TLR2 Protein in Vision Deterioration
During the study, the researchers examined the effect of the TLR2 protein, which plays an important role in the immune defense of the eyes. Under normal conditions, it helps fight infections, but when the retina is damaged, it begins to react not to pathogens, but to free oxygen molecules.
“This process sets off a chain reaction that accelerates the destruction of retinal cells,” the scientists note.
What diseases threaten vision?
According to experts, the most dangerous diseases associated with oxidative stress are age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. They are the main causes of vision loss in older people.

Experts recommend reducing the impact of oxidative stress by monitoring your diet, taking antioxidants, and protecting your eyes from ultraviolet radiation. It is also important to visit an ophthalmologist regularly to detect pathologies early.
