Russia will not be able to capture Sumy – experts on the real potential of the Russian group in Kursk region

On March 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russian troops were being deployed to the border with Sumy Oblast and were preparing for a possible attack. In connection with this, an evacuation of residents was announced in border areas, which caused a wave of discussions about the reality of the threat of occupation. Some argue that Ukraine's actions in Kursk Oblast provoked the enemy to escalate, but such theories do not stand up to criticism.

This was reported by URA-Inform, citing the Telegram channel of Ukrainian military-political observer Alexander Kovalenko.

“The reality is that the Kursk operation in 2024 allowed the creation of a security buffer, which excluded active sabotage actions by the enemy in the border areas for seven months and prevented a repeat of the Russian offensive according to the Kharkov scenario. Now the enemy is trying to create the appearance of a threat, simulating readiness for an offensive, but objective factors indicate otherwise,” Kovalenko notes.

According to expert estimates, there are about 60 thousand Russian servicemen concentrated in the Kursk region. However, this is clearly not enough to conduct a major offensive operation with the aim of occupying the entire Sumy region or at least its administrative center.

“In 2022, having better conditions, Russian troops were unable to encircle and take Sumy. Today, their situation is worse, and supplies leave much to be desired. What are they going to storm the city on? On scooters?” military analysts sarcastically note.

The example of the Belgorod group, which has 55 thousand people, also demonstrates the real state of affairs. In May 2024, the Russian army loudly announced an offensive in the Kharkiv region, but for several months it was unable to advance beyond small border villages and was effectively stuck in Vovchansk.
