May beetles are a real threat to your garden. These insects can not only ruin plants, but also damage the soil. May beetles, or as they are also called – grass beetles, actively appear in late spring and can cause significant problems in garden plots.
URA-Inform reports this.
The most dangerous for plants are the larvae of May beetles. These small white worms, feeding on plant roots, can destroy flowers, bushes and even trees in a few weeks. They are especially harmful to young plants and vegetables, as they damage the root system, preventing plants from receiving the necessary nutrition and moisture. As a result, the plants begin to wither and often die.
Adult cockchafers also cause damage as they eat the leaves of trees and shrubs, leaving behind characteristic damage. Fruit trees such as apple and cherry trees are particularly affected by these insects.
How to fight cockchafers? There are several effective methods:
1. Mechanical removal – manually pick the beetles off the plants and destroy them. This method is suitable for small areas.
2. Folk remedies – for example, infusions of garlic or tobacco can help repel beetles.
3. Use of chemicals – insecticides and special preparations against May beetle larvae can significantly reduce their numbers, but they should be used with caution so as not to harm beneficial insects.
4. Maintain healthy soil – Strengthening the root system of plants through fertilization and regular watering helps reduce the vulnerability of plants to pests.
By using an integrated approach, you can minimize damage from May beetles and preserve the harvest.
