Despite the renaming, the People's Friendship Arch in Kyiv is subject to complete dismantling, - Institute of National Patterns archival photo) <p>The Arch of Friendship of Peoples (renamed the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People) in Kiev belongs to the symbolism of Russian imperial policy and is subject to complete dismantling.</p> <p>This was stated by the expert commission of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, Interfax-Ukraine reports.< /p> </p> <p>“The Arch of Peoples' Friendship is located in Khreshchaty Park in Kiev, dedicated to events related to the implementation of Russian imperial policy and its glorification (installed in 1982 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the formation of the USSR and the 65th anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917), refers to symbols of Russian imperial policy and is subject to complete dismantling,” the conclusions say.</p> <p>It is noted that, despite the renaming, the monument “represents Soviet ideologies and connotations, and therefore poses a threat to the national security of Ukraine.”</p> <ul> <li>In May 2022, the Kiev City Council decided to decommunize the name of the People's Friendship Arch. Now this is the Freedom Arch of the Ukrainian people. The deputies also approved a list of more than 40 monuments and memorial signs that need to be removed from the streets and buildings and transferred to the museum of totalitarianism.</li> <li>On April 26, the monument at the Arch of Peoples' Friendship was dismantled in Kyiv. In 2016, the then Minister of Culture Yevgeny Nishchuk proposed demolishing the Arch of Peoples' Friendship, and in its place erecting a monument to ATO soldiers.</li> <li>In 2015, the chief architect of Kyiv Sergei Tselovalnik also proposed demolishing the Arch of Friendship of Peoples. “What kind of friendship is this if Russian troops came to our land with tanks?” – he said. </li> </ul> <p>The Arch of Friendship of Peoples was opened in 1982 in Khreshchaty Park in honor of the “reunification” of Ukraine with Russia. Construction lasted about four years and was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the founding of the USSR. The monument was opened on the eve of the anniversary of the October Revolution. The Arch of Nations consists of three elements: an arch in the form of a huge rainbow, a bronze sculpture of two workers (a Ukrainian and a Russian holding a ribbon with the Order of Friendship of Peoples at the top) and a granite sculpture with a scene of the Pereyaslav Council. Behind the monument there is an observation deck with a view of the Dnieper and its left bank.</p> <p><!--noindex--></p> <p><a rel=lb.ua
