The United States Department of Justice is making efforts to confiscate the money of the former head of the Ukrainian government Pavlo Lazarenko.
According to the Voice of America, we may be talking about 200 million dollars of the politician, arrested in different countries. The lawsuits over these funds have been ongoing for 20 years.
However, according to Mary Butler, head of the Department of Justice's Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Unit, a decision has recently been reached that brings the department closer to being able to confiscate the money for Ukraine.
- Pavel Lazarenko was the Prime Minister of Ukraine from May 1996 to June 1997. He was accused by the Prosecutor General's Office of embezzling state property on an especially large scale. In 1999, he fled the country and was arrested in the United States. According to several human rights organizations and political analysts, he is one of the ten most corrupt officials in the world.
