Kursk NPP
The International Atomic Energy Agency is a nuclear power plant with two active units, two in a state of shutdown and two under construction.
In a statement published on the IAEA website, the director of the agency, Rafael Grossi, “due to the report of significant military activity,” reminded the parties of the guarantees of the security of the nuclear facility during an armed conflict.
Grossi also noted that the safety principles established by the agency for the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant should also be applied to the Kursk NPP. The main one is the physical integrity of the plant. This imperative must be respected, “wherever the facility was”.
The director asks the parties to resort to the maximum possible restrictions to avoid a nuclear incident with potential radiological consequences. Grossi is “in contact with the authorized authorities of both countries”.
- The IAEA expressed concern about the fires near the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which could disrupt the power supply to the plant.
- Ukraine does not officially comment on the military actions in the Kursk region.
