Russians buy the terminals on the “black market” and receive them from Europe via the United Arab Emirates.

WP: Illegal Starlink terminals help Russian army become more effective on the battlefield

Russian troops have become more effective on the battlefield with the help of illegal Starlink terminals, which have allowed them to use satellite Internet to improve coordination during assaults, carry out more drone sorties, and hit Ukrainian troops with precise artillery fire – despite U.S. efforts to stop the flow of technology.

The Washington Post writes about this.

Starlink has been spreading across Russian positions for a year now, but it's only in the last few months that its impact has become truly felt.

The Kremlin can’t officially buy Starlink because of Western sanctions, so it sources them from a growing “black market.” The terminals, which allow commanders to see the battlefield in real time via drones and provide secure communications between soldiers, have been a key factor in Russia’s recent offensive successes, Ukrainian military officials said.

Until now, the Starlink terminals were one of the few advantages Kyiv had against Moscow’s larger but less modernized force. Russian troops relied primarily on radio to communicate what they were seeing and doing during battles — much slower than the fast internet. “We can’t attack,” Ukrainian defense officials said.

An officer of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, which has been defending the Ugledar area since 2022 and was recently forced to withdraw, called Russia's use of Starlink one of the important factors that accelerated the Russians' successes in the city area.

Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen note that American billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX company has not done enough to combat the illegal use of Starlink and said that he appears to be favorably disposed toward Russia.

At the same time, the Pentagon says the U.S. and Ukrainian governments are working with SpaceX to “prevent Russia from illegally using Starlink terminals in occupied Ukraine,” specifically focusing the U.S. Treasury Department's attention on “potential sanctions violations” related to international smuggling.

How to Buy Starlink in Russia

Before Starlink revolutionized the market, previous generations of satellite field terminals were slow and expensive. Now, users can buy terminals for a few hundred dollars and pay a monthly fee for service in more than 100 countries and territories, but not in Russia.

Although Russian companies and individuals are not allowed to sell Starlink, a gray market has emerged. Most terminals are sold via Telegram and begin their journey in the Moscow region before reaching the front. The price of a terminal in Russia is just over $1,000. Customer service is free, and everyone receives recommendations to “minimize the risks of blocking.”

To activate the device, users need a foreign phone number, email address, and bank account to pay the monthly subscription fee. Terminals are mainly purchased in Europe and transported to Russia via the United Arab Emirates.

 • In September, the Ukrainian Defense Forces destroyed the Russian “Shahed-136”, equipped with SpaceX's Starlink satellite communications, during a Russian drone attack on the night of September 25.
