This decision “could take weeks and months.”
After talking to high-ranking diplomats from NATO countries, Reuters claims that the Ukrainian authorities' call to immediately invite our country to the Alliance will be ignored at a meeting of foreign ministers this week.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said in a letter to his colleagues that the invitation would deprive the Kremlin of one of its reasons to wage war against Ukraine – namely, to prevent the country from joining NATO. However, there is no agreement among the 32 members of the alliance on making such a decision in Brussels on Tuesday.
According to one of the sources, it will take “weeks and even months” to reach consensus on the issue. If Ukraine's invitation suddenly becomes a subject of serious discussion at the ministerial meeting, “it will be a surprise.”
However, it is more likely that NATO government representatives will discuss “how Ukraine can be in the strongest position before the talks.” The alliance sees three key factors: “money, weapons and mobilization.”
