Pletenchuk on the Russian tanker disaster in the Kerch Strait: the Russians violated everything they could,

Two Russian tankers, which yesterday marked the catastrophes in the Kerch Strait and are actually military-class vessels, went to sea without adhering to shipping requirements.

The spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmitry Pletenchuk, said this on the air of “Public”.

“The weather conditions that were at sea at that time were not those under which they could be in the open sea… Here, as always, the Russians violated everything they could violate,” Pletenchuk noted.

He stressed that the storm season is underway and will end by mid-spring. Until then, it is difficult to clarify all the circumstances, and it will be difficult for the Russians to pull the tankers out of the water. At the same time, such storm conditions complicate navigation regarding the exit of the Russian Black Sea Fleet warships from the bays and the use of cruise missiles.

The representative of the Ukrainian Navy also stressed that these tankers are old, over 50 years old. They could have been detained at the mooring longer than planned, and the ship's captain should have taken all these factors into account and calculated all the risks.

“But of course, transferring Russian oil or other fuels and lubricants is more important to them than complying with the safety requirements of civilian shipping,” Pletenchuk emphasized.

He noted that this is not the only case when they violate the rules of navigation. In particular, we are talking about non-compliance with the requirements for coastal warnings and the constant shutdown of the identification system. According to the press secretary of the Ukrainian Navy, one of these vessels that got into an accident near the Kerch Strait also periodically turned off this system.

We will add that the Kerch Strait has been officially closed to civilian shipping by Ukraine for more than a year, but the Russians neglect these rules.

Yesterday it became known about two sinking Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait – “Volgoneft 212” and “Volgoneft 239”. The cause of the incident was a storm, the ships were damaged.

There were 13 and 14 people on board the tankers, respectively. The tankers were transporting more than 8 tons of fuel oil. A sailor died as a result of the incident.

Greenpeace Ukraine Director Natalia Gozak said that the tankers were transporting fuel for military ships. A similar incident occurred in 2007, when the Volgoneft tanker sank in the Kerch Strait, resulting in about 1,500 tons of oil spilling into the sea. Even a year later, the concentration of oil products in the water was tens of times higher than normal.

Eliminating the consequences of such pollution requires the efforts of not just one institution, but international cooperation.
